Keeping your IT system safe
When on the Internet it is important that your PC has some protection,
it is good practice to ensure that:
1) You are using an up to date
anti-virus package – ideally not just the definitions but
also the “package itself” – i.e. 2006 not 2003.
Please contact Jireh Solutions for specific advice on this.
2) You have a firewall installed. Windows XP
Service Pack 2 includes such a firewall. If you are using Windows
XP the Service Pack can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/
.
Alternatively you may want to consider ZoneAlarm – a free
version is available from http://www.zonelabs.com/
but only ever have one firewall running.
3) You have the latest service packs and hot
fixes from Microsoft. In Internet Explorer select Tools from the
menu at the top of the page, then select Windows Update. If you
have not already upgraded to Microsoft Update then do use the
link on this page to get the update. This enhances the level of
protection/updates available and is well worthwhile.
4) You have popup protection. If you use the
Google Toolbar you not only get this protection but also have
the benefit of easier searching. This is available free from
http://www.google.co.uk/intl/en/options/
5) You have anti-spyware protection. There are
numerous products available for this, many of which are actually
part of the problem not the solution. If you ever get a popup
stating that you have a spyware problem and “click here”
to solve it – DON’T. Effectiveness varies but the
following products are worth looking at. Contact Jireh Solutions
for more information or specific advice in dealing with an infected
PC.
